- GPL v3 due Friday -- don't trip over the lawyers at the Apple Store - 2007-06-28 17:21:12-04
Talk about timing ... just as the iPhone hysteria whips into a physical location frenzy near you, a probably more significant development will unfold on Friday. Reports have it that the postponed but widely anticipated latest GLP open source license, version 3, will become available. So all those lawyers at Microsoft can kill two birds with one off-campus trip. They can buy their Apple iPhone (they can afford one), connect to their iTunes on their Windows laptops, set it up on WiFi and then listen and watch the video stream of the GPLv3 launch on the pristine iPhone screen -- all while still in their cars outside the Apple Store in Bellevue. Can't do that with a SUSE Linux server,...
- You can use the iPhone SIM and wireless data in other AT&T and unlocked phones - 2007-06-28 17:26:21-04
I asked the question about the swappability of the AT&T iPhone SIM and haven't seen the answer anywhere, until now. I just read through the iPhone Launch Guide found on The Boy Genius Report and on page 31 of 65 it states that MEdiaNet will be used to access the internet if a customer takes out the iPhone SIM and puts it into another AT&T device. That does it, I will now finalize my purchase strategy and get in line with all the other iPhone fans to try to secure a device tomorrow. As a reviewer, I need the flexibility to swap my SIM into unlocked devices and now that I know this is possible the risk associated with the...
- Google Answers, the next generation - 2007-06-28 17:38:49-04
Google Russia has launched a Russian-only "Questions and Answers" portal that is simply a really good version of Google Answers -- which has been shut down for quite a while now. I don't speak Russian, so thankfully the Russian to English translator from Google actually works pretty good. Ask questions If you have a question, which you are not able to find the answer, click on the "Ask". When you return to your question, we are looking for similar issues that may already be in the system. Be sure to include multiple labels to the question that other people can find it. Your question will be shown to those who are interested in the proposed order. Read labels and join...
- BlackBerry-maker announces FY 2008 1Q numbers: 9 mil+ users - 2007-06-28 17:54:27-04
BlackBerry-maker Research In Motion starts their Fiscal Year at the end of the first quarter of each calendar year. Because we are coming up to July 1, that means the end of 1Q FY'2008. Here are the numbers RIM thinks you should know: Revenue for the first quarter of fiscal 2008 was $1.082 billion, up 16.3% from $930.4 million in the previous quarter and up 76.5% from $613.1 million in the same quarter of last year. The revenue breakdown for the quarter was approximately 76% for devices, 16% for service, 5% for software and 3% for other revenue. During the quarter, RIM shipped approximately 2.4 million devices. The total number of BlackBerry subscriber accounts in the quarter increased by...
- The Desktop Virtualization Diaries (prologue): The Good, the Bad, and the horribly Ugly - 2007-06-28 20:46:04-04
Quite frankly, I have no idea whether I'll make it to entry #2. But the trials and tribulations of virtualizing my desktop system have been too many to chronicle in one blog post and it only seems fitting to break it up into a series of posts. I'm doing this because, for almost two years now, I've been extolling virtues of moving to a fully virtualized desktop, all along promising to practice what I preach. So, now that I'm practicing it, I find myself questioning whether I should be preaching it. Let me clear before I start on the series. I have no regrets about virtualizing my desktop. I'm glad I did it and would do it again. I know...
- 24 hours until iPhone and I am first in line - 2007-06-28 21:15:21-04
I just showed up at my local AT&T store here in Puyallup, WA and I am the first in line. Right now my 13 year old and 7 year old are in line with me and my 13 year old will stay the whole time so I can purchase 2 iPhones. The store manager just told me that you can buy one for each person in line at the local AT&T stores so that is very cool since I was thinking this was only possible at the Apple stores. So far no one else is here, but hey I am crazy that way and happy to be a geek. My wife wasn't so keen on the idea, but she may...

- Analyst: companies not ready for long SOA journey - 2007-06-28 22:41:57-04
Anne Thomas Manes of the Burton Group has a gift for seeing through all the muck and hype to give us a clear picture on what's really going on with SOA. Paul Krill was on hand at this week's Burton Group conference, and provides an account of Anne's latest speech, in which she noted that many vendors are taking old products and dressing them up as "SOA." SOA isn't about technology at all, she pointed out. "SOA is how how you think about solving the problem." SOA will take time to deliver its true benefits, including aligning IT with the business and providing flexibility and agility, and many companies aren't prepared for such long-term efforts, she also said, pointing out...
- Powerset: The natural language search mashup platform - 2007-06-28 23:10:06-04
Powerset finally came out of stealth mode tonight at it offices in San Francisco. The technology is not ready until September, but the company unveiled what it is doing to revolutionize search. "The patents and technology are locked down," said Steve Newcomb, a Powerset co-founder and COO. "We after after pretty big goal--replacing the core of the search engine." Powerset has attracted top talent among its 70-person crew, and plans to use tens of thousand of developers to build a search mashup ecosystem around its platform. Powerset is using natural language technology from Xerox Parc and focusing its efforts on indexing. It's building a search destination site and a platform that leverages the wisdom of the crowds. "Natural language search...
- What kind of choices do you have if you don't want an iPhone? - 2007-06-29 00:54:40-04
I've been writing about the iPhone for a couple of weeks like every other mobile blogger and have been bouncing back and forth on whether or not I was going to purchase it. After the internal AT&T document confirmed that I could swap the SIM card into other devices I decided to go for it and am now the first in line at my local AT&T store so I am assured of getting two tomorrow (my oldest teenage daughter is hanging with me tonight). However, there are many other very good alternatives for those of you who don't want to extend your AT&T contract or switch to AT&T and want to stick with your current provider. Actually, most of these...
- Jobs, AT&T's Stephenson:no problems anticipated - 2007-06-29 01:47:24-04
For an article in today's USA Today, Apple CEO Steve Jobs and AT&T Wireless CEO Randall Stephenson sat down with USA Today's Jefferson Graham to talk about the big day- iPhone's first day of sale at Apple retail outlets, AT&T Wireless stores and online. Supply chain issues informed some of their dialogue: Q: People are lining up at the stores now to buy the iPhone when it goes on sale. How do you make sure there isn't bedlam? Jobs: It's happened before—people line up for our products, and are respectful of each other. We don't anticipate any problems. Q: Why did you choose 6 p.m. to put the phone on sale, instead of the more traditional 10 a.m? Jobs: It seemed like a...
- Skeptical reader: Andrew Keen's big ideas - 2007-06-29 02:49:50-04
On the last afternoon of the Supernova Conference, David Weinberger and fellow ZD Net blogger Andrew Keen, debated the question, "Disorder: Feature or Bug?" Unfortunately, they didn't actually manage to demonstrate a definitive answer to that question, because all we learned was that they disagreed. Chris Heuer took notes. Keen, the author of The Cult of the Amateur, chose to deride everyone associated with Web 2.0 as wide-eyed utopians and, particularly, assumed anyone The first principle borne out by the debate last Friday: Skepticism is essentialwith a question during the session was a kind of idiot pandering to the new order. In a post-session interview, he said people who disagree with him seek him out "because they always are looking...
- How to make millions from hacking - 2007-06-29 03:15:33-04
It's simple really: just use the stock market's herd mentality against it. Pick a large company that is information dependent and whose shares have shown significant volatility over the last few months. Then hack its systems, short the share, cause their systems to fail in publically embarrassing ways, and buy the shares you need at a significant discount. The volatility will make it hard for the regulators to nail you and you can make money first on the price fall, and then on the inevitable rebound - think of it as a criminal win win. United Airlines, for example, meets the target selection criteria, collapsed down to about $35 when its planes sat on the tarmac on June 18th,...
- hi5 saves time with Hyperic Enterprise - 2007-06-29 06:00:03-04
I had an opportunity to speak with Akash Garg, hi5 Network's CTO, about how his organization is using tools from Hyperic. Thanks Akash for taking the time to chat with me. Please tell me who you are and a bit about your organization. hi5 networks is a leading social networking destination on the net. They have 35 employees in San Francisco and a service center with additional 10 staff members in India. hi5's goal is helping people connect with friends and to meet new friends. What does your organization do that needs what Hyperic offers? At last count hi5 has roughly 30 millions active accounts a month. It offers its service to people in over 200 countries. In any...
- Ning! MySpace is dead. Long live social networking. - 2007-06-29 06:13:45-04
I stumbled across Ning a few weeks ago as I was looking for some end-of-year activities for restless students. Ning is a free service that actually lets you create your own social network. While this turned out to be an interesting exercise for my students, particularly once they understood that they weren't creating mere web pages but actually building social networks, Ning (and other services like it) could prove to be an invaluable tool for schools and educators. Here's how it works: Create a Ning account. Create a social network Create your own set of pages that will be your home in your social network Invite people to join your social network Manage users, friends, etc., on your social network...
- The computer can do that? - 2007-06-29 07:02:17-04
We're finally hitting the home stretch on scheduling our students for next year. I have a so-called "Master Schedule" that I'm pretty happy with and I'm loading students into it to see just how well it works. If any of my favorite students get bumped out of the classes they want, I'll rework it. Just kidding, of course, but it it something of a trial and error process. This trial and error process used to involve a giant board constructed by our former woodshop teacher with little tags representing teachers and classes. While we still use this board for reference and big picture (literally) visualization, our guidance counselors and administrators are amazed that our student information system software can build...
- JetBlue cancellations strands thousands in New York - 2007-06-29 07:54:22-04
Trying to fly out of New York these last few days has been a hellish experience. JetBlue was hit especially hard and they ended up cancelling dozens of flights on Wednesday and Thursday and I was one of the unfortunate flyers that were stuck in New York after covering the Digital Experience event Wednesday night. The cancellations started late Tuesday and hundreds maybe thousands are still stranded at JFK and LGA airports. The most frustrating part was that JetBlue refused to notify people the flights were cancelled until 2 hours before departure and we were told that it was due to weather when some flights were taking off and the weather looked fine. JetBlue was hit so badly in February...

- AT&T quietly bumping EDGE network speed - 2007-06-29 08:00:04-04
Users of AT&T's much maligned Enhanced Data rates for GSM Evolution (EDGE) data network are reporting faster download speeds beginning late Thursday. The company is believed to be tweaking network speeds in anticipation of today's iPhone launch. Engadget has found download speeds peaking past 200 kilobits per second (kbps) on the newly enhanced EDGE network. Normally download speeds hover around 170 kbps as opposed to EVDO which can peak as high as 700 kbps. You can test your mobile download speeds by visiting DSLReports.com/mspeed on your mobile device. I did three tests this morning on my Treo 700p running on the Verizon EVDO network and was able to achieve an average download speed of 325 kbps. For my tests I...
- Microsoft goes internal for new Business Solutions chief - 2007-06-29 08:10:06-04
Microsoft is moving Kirill Tatarinov, currently the head of its Management and Solutions unit, to lead the Microsoft Business Solutions business. The MBS team, which oversees the Microsoft Dynamics ERP/CRM family of products, had been searching for a new chief since March, when Microsoft moved Satya Nadella from MBS to head up the newly combined Live Search/adCenter business. Microsoft Business Solutions (MBS) is part of Microsoft's larger Microsoft Business Division, which encompass Microsoft Office, SharePoint Server and Microsoft's unified-communications products. Tatarinov is a five year Microsoft veteran. Before Microsoft, Tatarinov was Senior Vice President and Chief Technology Officer for BMC software. No word yet on who will replace Tatarinov on Microsoft's systems-management side of the business; a search is...
